Day 3: Monday May 11, 2015 - Practice Day and Opening Ceremony

Good Morning Pittsburgh ... sunny again and warm.

A scheduled 8;30 am breakfast at the nearby au Bon Pain gets the group up and running. Some of the students headed back to the Fair to finalize some additions to their set-up

Team Montreal, having arrived late Sunday proceeded to do their set-up today.

No SRC violations this year so there were lots of free prep time from the chaperones to listen to the students' mock presentations.  Presentations went from 10 a,m to 2 pm with lunch in Cathy's room (pizzas ordered in).

News of opposing fairs levying accusations of SRC violations against Canadian projetcs surface again ... a backhand way of showing respect, I guess

Nevertheless, all was settled and the Canadian team was again all dressed in our Canadian reds and draped in our Canadian flags, and headed over to the Convention Centre for the evening’s Opening Ceremony Dinner and Celebrations.  Even more flags came out than the Pin Trade event.  Canada definitely won the flag war.  Prior to the Opening Ceremony, IISEF had an wonderful buffet dinner ready for all of the participants.

In past years, prior to the scripted part of the Opening Ceremony, there is a spirited invitation to all of the students to run around and show their spirit.  Unfortunately, this year did not include this portion and we missed out on the usual Canadian Craziness.  This year's opening act was a performance by XPOGO, an acrobatic team of 4 Pogo performers,

The students and crowd were entertained and inspired by the evening's keynote speaker Luis von Ahn (creator of reCAPTCHAwho entertained us with his story on reCaptcha and duoLingo.

By 9 pm, the event was drawing to a close.  Canada's popularity was evident by all of the many requests from other teams wanting to have their pictures taken with our group.  Very compelling about our groups's spirit and energy.

An end of evening pow-wow was held on floor 5 and Captain Cathy had some special words of advice for Team Canada reminding them of their responsibilities.  Tomorrow's agenda was reviewed
